The third night of UMRFC’s intrasquad sevens games has ended and teams are clearly growing as players gain more experience and hone their skills with each game. The games have certainly been entertaining to watch with many talented players putting their abilities on display. Please check our YouTube channel in the next day or two if you would like to see the games for yourself.
Game 1: Steven M. Ross 19 – Don Canham 12
This incredibly hard fought game was certainly a nail-biter. The action started off with Jared Bosma making a hard run into two Canham defenders only to quickly offload the ball to Joel Conzelmann who had a clear breakaway for 60 yards for the try. Conzelmann converted his own try to make the score 7-0 Ross. The two teams jockeyed for position on the next several possessions, each pushing up and down the field, but with a minute and a half on the clock Oliver Gregerson offloaded the ball to Nick Lazurka who toed the sideline, barely avoiding getting pushed out and ran 20 yards for the try. C.J. Stock converted the try making it a tie game at the half. The first score of the second half came off of a lineout deep in Ross’ territory. The ball was loose and Ian Etheart was able to fall on it and go the short distance into the try zone. The conversion was no good however, making it 12-7 Canham. Ross responded as Chris Padmos offloaded the ball to Cole Van Harn who took the ball in for the try with Conzelmann converting to make it 14-12 Ross. The final score of the game came with just over a minute left in the half again as Padmos ran the ball himself this time, running through several tacklers to score the try. The conversion was no good however leaving Canham alive at 19-12. However they could not break Ross’ defensive line and Ross left victorious.
Game 2: James J. Duderstadt 14 – James Earl Jones 5
This was truly a close game. The first half saw a great deal of scrums and hard fought rucks. Unfortunately the first half closed with Joe Poznanski suffering a serious knee injury. The team wishes him the best luck on his diagnosis and we hope he can recover as quickly and fully as possible. The first score of the game came about 2 minutes into the second half as Zach Kendall offloaded the ball to Cooper Smart who went on to score. Evan Noon converted the try, making it 7-0 Dudes. The Dudes continued to put on the pressure as they advanced down the field and as they secured an offensive ruck the ball was bumped down the line twice and Zach Kendall smashed through the line to score the try. The conversion was good, making it 14-0. Jones wouldn’t be held off the board as on-loan back Robbie Greenfield beat the defense to the sideline and sped down the wing to score. The conversion was no good. The final score was 14-5 Dudes.
Game 3: Bennie Oosterbaan 41 – Mary Sue Coleman 10
The third game of the night was dominated by the scoring of Grady Bridges and Chris Hopfner. Hopfner started the scoring with a hard run through the defensive line of Coleman with Bridges converting the try. He followed up this by capitalizing on a turnover by the Sues and breaking away for a second try with a successful conversion to give Bennie an early 14-0 lead. The next score was a result of a Oosterbaan lineout that Hopfner fielded and offloaded to Bridges who broke away for the score and conversion. Bridges followed this up by capitalizing on another Sue turnover which he took 40 yards for a try and unsuccessful conversion to make the score 26-0 at the half. The second half saw Hopfner break through the line with a hard run and offload to Ryan McDonough for the score. The Sues were able to get on the board after a run by Nick Fehrman that led to a score by Robbie Greenfield on the next phase. Bennie wasn’t going to let go of the momentum and Chris Hopfner received the kickoff and ran right through the Sues defense to score. He followed up the hat trick with a fourth and final try by intercepting a Mary Sue pass and running untouched for the try. The last score of the game came when the Sues won a scrum and Matt Pilon broke through the line to make the score 41-10.
Game 4: Don Canham 24 – James J. Duderstadt 5
The fourth match of the night was dominated by the big men upfront and great defensive play. Canham started off the scoring with Jordan Ulmer picking off a Dudes pass and running the short distance for the try. C.J. Stock converted the try to give Canham the lead halfway through the first half. Ulmer followed this play up by offloading the ball to Ian Etheart who capped off the possession with a score. The conversion was no good. Following another strong possession for Canham, the Dudes were awarded a defensive lineout close to their own try zone. Canham was able to make a play on the ball and Ulmer found himself with the ball again, taking it in for the try with a hard run over the short distance. Stock was unable to convert. Canham’s scoring streak continued when Oliver Gregerson took the ball down the wing for a long try with conversion to give Canham a commanding 24-0 lead. The Dudes were not going to be held off the board however as John Palladino put them on the board with a 70 yard try after a great series of defensive plays by the dudes. The conversion however was unsuccessful and the final score was 24-5
Game 5: Bennie Oosterbaan 5 – Steven M. Ross 31
The fifth match of the night saw Ross flex their muscles again against a strong Bennie team. Joel Conzelmann started the game off with a statement, taking the kickoff right back down the field to score a long try and set the tone for the rest of the game. Conzelmann successfully converted his own try. 7-0 Ross. Cole Van Harn followed this up by taking an offload from Conzelmann and cutting across the field to break through the middle of the Bennie defensive line to score a 55 yard try. He failed to convert his own try. Van Harn struck again on the last possession of the first half, taking the offload from Austin and speeding down the wing to score the try. He failed to convert his own try yet again. Ross continued to apply the pressure in the second half, as Jared Bozma passed the ball to Christian Mentzer who cutback on the defense to score a short try. The conversion was no good. Ross cemented their lead with as Bosma offloaded to Mentzer once again who evaded the defence and ran through the line to score a try with a successful conversion by Bosma. Bennie wasn’t about to give up however, on the last possession of the game they took the ball downfield and while threatening to score on Ross’ side of the field, Jeff Smith was able to offload to a wide open Grady Bridges who ran it in to put Bennie on the board as the game ended. He could not convert his own try however, making the final score 31-5 Ross.
Game 6: Mary Sue Coleman 15 – James Earl Jones 35
The six game looked like it might be the Sues first win, but unfortunately for the Sues, it was not in the cards. Robbie Greenfield started off the scoring for the Sues, breaking away for a long try to give the Sues the lead, but he was unable to convert the try. On the following Jones possession, Nelson Worner looked like he was about to respond with a try of his own but was taken down by Nick Fehrman only to have Jones bump the ball out to Jordan Ulmer who made a hard run for the try. Zack Burns’ conversion was successful. 5-7 Jones. On-loan back Evan Noon responded by grubbing the ball far down the field and running his own kick down. The Sues were able to capitalize off the gain in field position as Robbie Greenfield ran around the edge of Jones’ defensive line two phases later. The conversion was no good. Jones was not about to give up the lead so easily however and Burns slipped through the Coleman defensive line a few plays later, converting his own try to make the score 14-10 Jones. In the second half Robbie started off the half for the Sues by making a long run to the 7 yard line and capitalizing on the opportunity he made by scoring on the ensuing phase. He could not convert however. Kenny Andutan showed off why he’s captain of the club however on the ensuing Jones possession as he was passed the ball and ran right through the Coleman defensive line, scoring the try with a successful conversion by Burns. Andutan kept Jones driving forward, following up his first score with a second in similar fashion with another successful conversion by Burns, giving Jones a 28-15 lead. Jones capped off the game with a final score by Evan Rourke, who ran right through the middle of the Coleman defense to score with Burns scoring another successful conversion, capping off the victory for Jones with a score of 35-15.
