Since Monday 9th September the UMRFC has been gaining early access to the weight room in the Intramural Sports Building in order to conduct a team lift prior to business hours. Despite the early wake up call, players are determined to take every opportunity to gain an advantage over their opposition on Saturdays.
Last week players tested their maximal strength in the dead lift and bench press exercises with some impressive numbers recorded by both forwards and backs. Stuart Roche the team’s strength and conditioning coach had the following to say about the max strength testing session, “The boys produced some impressive lifts this week. We haven’t been able to test maximally for a while, so for returners and freshman alike to brush up on technique and hammer max lifting right out of the gate was awesome.”
Coach Roche also mentioned that the max numbers recorded by a player would be used to establish their individualized lifting schema, optimizing their strength and power training throughout the season.
The top absolute weights recorded for the 1RM in dead lift and bench press were as follows:
Dead lift (lbs):
1. 505 – Nick Fehrman
2. 500 – Sequoyah Burke-Combs
3. 490 – Zach Kendall
Bench press (lbs):
1. 335 – Zach Kendall
2. 300 – Sequoyah Burke-Combs
3. 290 – Joel Conzelmann, Nick Fehrman
The team will continue to lift during these early morning time slots transitioning from a strength focus to a speed and power focus.
