This past weekend was the date of the annual Olde Boys alumni weekend with treachery and experience matching off against youth and spirit. There was plenty of rugby to be had for all involved and 3 games were played this past Saturday so that the olde and young could bond once again on the rugby pitch over the sport they both love. Play started off with a game between a grizzled side of Olde Blue against the fresher members of this years UMRFC team. Young talent looked like they might be able to take first blood, but experience prevailed and the Olde Boys team took the game 19-14. Next up was the current 1st XV against a slightly olde and very talented alumni team. The game started off very even with the score going into half in favor of the youngsters 14-12. However the tide of eager Olde Boys coming on to the field proved too much for the young side and the Olde Boys would end the game victorious with a score of 39-26. The last game of the day saw they youngsters of the academy side try to stave off an Olde Boy sweep with solid tackling and hard running coming from the current UMRFC side. However, once again experience would prevail and two late tries would secure a third victory for the alumni side with a score of 37-24.
Overall it was an incredible weekend for all involved and the current UMRFC players would like to whole-heartedly thank everyone who came out to Ann Arbor to share the weekend with the club. It was an amazing time and great way to both celebrate the culture of rugby as well as the culture and tradition of such a storied and amazing rugby club. The current players certainly picked up some new tricks from the experienced Olde Boys sides and are looking forward to taking that new experience to Illinois this upcoming weekend to debut what Soiled Meat and Sand is all about. Once again we would like to thank everyone who came out this weekend and made it the amazing time it was and heartily encourage anyone who couldn’t make it out this year to come next year!
