As recently as 2017, Michigan Rugby conducted a multi-week intrasquad sevens tournament each winter. Squished between busy falls and springs competing against clubs from other colleges, “intrasquads” was meant as a fun competition to prepare for the upcoming sevens season. Coach Matt Trenary led intrasquads during his first stint as head coach in the early 2010s. Now that he’s back, so are intrasquads.
This year’s intrasquad tournament will take place in Oosterbaan Field House, Michigan Rugby’s winter home. The tournament will consist of five rounds of regular season play (two games per round per team) and will culminate in championship playoffs on February 24.
The intrasquad tournament has always consisted of six teams, each named after prominent University of Michigan figures: Stephen M. Ross (Ross), James Earl Jones (Jones), James J. Duderstadt (Dudes), Mary Sue Coleman (Sues), Don Canham (Canham), and Bennie Oosterbaan (Benny). Players are drafted onto one of the six teams when they join the club, and they stay with that team for their entire Michigan Rugby careers.
Over the next five weeks, we’ll take you with Michigan Rugby as we cover the tournament. We’ll post the video feed from each round to our Youtube channel, and a team of freshmen, including myself, will post recaps of each round to mrugby.com in the form of power rankings. Go Blue!
