Michigan Rugby’s 2022 spring tour is just one week away! Every year, the team goes on spring vacation to engage in philanthropy, sightseeing, and of course rugby. In recent years, UMRFC has traveled to destinations including Mexico, Colombia and the United Kingdom; this year, Michigan Rugby is taking its talents to Arizona and California for some sun, sights, and scrums. Let’s check out the rugby itinerary!
In the first half of the week, Michigan has a scrimmage with Arizona State University on Sunday and a joint training with San Diego State University on Wednesday. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity for the team to train with Division I-A level competition, familiarize itself with the west coast style of college rugby, and get ready for the main event. Michigan’s third training session will take place up the road at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center. Our team will eat, sleep, and breathe rugby at a world-class facility, home of the USA national rugby sevens team. The opportunity to train like the nation’s top rugby athletes really takes this year’s tour to the next level, a level of experience UMRFC will strive to maintain. To round out the rugby side of the tour, the team will attend a sevens match between UCLA and Cal, two top-tier west coast college programs. This rivalry match should be another great rugby experience for the team. Visualizing the game is one of the best passive ways to get better.
During the trip, players will write diary entries recounting their favorite tour experiences. Most of the players on this year’s tour are first timers, so stay tuned for the upcoming spring tour diary article and hear their stories!
