Wolverines Prepare to Start Spring in South Bend

Braden Loughnane feeds the ball into a scrum in a 15s match vs Notre Dame on September 10, 2021.

This Saturday, March 26, Michigan will send three sides to the Notre Dame 7s Invitational, a competitive tournament featuring some of the best college rugby teams in the country. Michigan’s top two sides are slated to compete in the main 32-team tournament, while the third side will participate in a second-tier 8-team competition.

The main tournament is single-elimination, although losing teams continue competing for every place from 2nd to 32nd. Breaking down the bracket (attached below), Michigan’s first side will face Kentucky in the first round and either Notre Dame or Wisconsin in the second round. Meanwhile, Michigan’s second side will take on highly-seeded Kutztown followed by either Minnesota or Bowling Green. In the reserve competition, Michigan’s third side will play Marian’s 2s, Bowling Green’s 2s, Kentucky’s 2s, and a crossover final match with the other pool.

This tournament will serve as excellent preparation for the upcoming Big Ten 7s series, which kicks off in Illinois on April 2nd. While series points in the Big Ten are not at stake this week, the winner of Notre Dame 7s automatically qualifies for the Collegiate Rugby Championship in New Orleans over Memorial Day weekend. There is a lot to fight for!
