Michigan went to West Lafayette hungry for Big Ten points, and they got what they came for.
The big story of Michigan’s performance at Purdue 7s was the first side. Despite a tough pool play loss to eventual runner-up Penn State, the Wolverines rattled off wins against Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Illinois to earn 5th place in the tournament. More importantly, Michigan has jumped up to 4th place in the Big Ten 7s Series standings, and could sneak into a top three spot with a good showing this weekend at home. One more classic Nathan Feldman performance (3 tries, 7 conversions, 29 points) and some aggressive team defense just might do the trick.
A shorthanded Michigan second side languished in the six-team developmental bracket, but between injuries, travel availability, and promotions to the first side, it’s fair to say they were not destined to repeat their stellar Illinois performance. At least one of those factors will not be an issue next weekend, but first side will need all the help they can get if they want to knock off Indiana, Penn State, or Ohio State.
This coming Saturday, Michigan is hosting the third and final installment of the Big Ten 7s Series. We hope to see many of you at Mitchell Field for the competition, but for those who want to follow along from anywhere, check out our Twitter for game updates and Youtube for live matches!
