Eugene Rontal is our November Alumnus of the Month. Congratulations to Eugene on both his rugby career and his career as a doctor, professor, and author.
When did you play?
I played on the Michigan Rugby team in 1966-67 when I was enrolled in the University of Michigan Medical School.
What position did you play?
I was a prop when I played. It was my job to stabilize the scrum and support the hooker.
What got you started?
It was 1960, I was sixteen years old and just enrolled at the University of Michigan. I wanted to be a doctor. It wasn’t easy. My education was intense with little time for extra-curricular activities. Regardless, I was always interested in contact sports. When I was in my third year of medical school, by chance, I saw a notice about the Michigan Rugby team. In your life, there are times when you get an opportunity to do something you always wanted to do. In my case I didn’t want to look back and say I wished I had tried it out. It was the right decision for me.
Any honors or awards?
No one would mistake me for a New Zealand All Black. My honor was personal.
What are your favorite memories/teammates?
My favorite memory was playing against Indiana and returning a kick. I didn’t score, but I got the ball to my teammate who did.
What have you done since Michigan Rugby?
I graduated with an M.D. degree from the University of Michigan and became an ear, nose and throat doctor. In addition to my practice, I am an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan Medical School. I have also published five medical mystery thrillers and have given a Ted Talk on imagination and creativity this year at the Powers Center. My biggest accomplishment has been my family—my wife, daughter, son, daughter-in-law, and my five grandsons.
How as Michigan Rugby affected your life beyond rugby?
When I look back at my time playing Michigan Rugby, I have the satisfaction that I accepted a challenge and succeeded.
Congratulations again to our November Alumnus of the Month Eugene Rontal. Thank you for your year of playing rugby for Michigan!
