Matthew Daines is our April Player of the Month. Since joining the team, Daines has become a cornerstone of first side success in 7s and 15s, trucking over the competition. Congratulations, Matthew!

Why did you decide to play rugby?
Needed an outlet and to make friends.

What have you liked about Michigan Rugby so far?
The sense of community and belonging, the team had uplifted my time at Michigan massively.

Describe your most memorable moment on the field.
Definitely when Tommy Hammond dragged an AIC player out of bounds to win the game, putting us in the top 8 in the CRCs.

What’s your most favorite rugby drill in practice? Least favorite?
Least favorite is passing lines and most favorite is chaos 5v3

What other sports have you played?
Wrestling and football

What do you see yourself doing in five years?
Being an architect and furniture designing

What is an embarrassing childhood memory that you can share with us?

I was really into the idea of digging an underground fort. When beginning I stabbed my toe with a shovel and cried

What is your favorite place in Ann Arbor?
Packard street in the summer.

What is your biggest fear?
Dark corners

What is your favorite food?
Warm pretzels

Do you have any game-day superstitions? Explain.
I have to tape my wrists in a certain way or I fear I may get hurt.

Who’s your favorite superhero? Why?
My dad, he’s my hero. 

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire.
