As recently as 2020, Michigan Rugby conducted a multi-week intrasquad sevens tournament each winter. Scheduled during the off-season, intrasquads present an avenue for increased team engagement through fun competition. However, due to social distancing limitations, it will be looking much different from previous years.
This year’s intrasquad tournament will take place in a socially-distanced manner, from pull-up competitions to timed crossword puzzles. The tournament will run until the end of the Winter Semester in late April.
The intrasquad tournament has always consisted of six teams, each named after prominent University of Michigan figures: Stephen M. Ross (Ross), James Earl Jones (Jones), James J. Duderstadt (Dudes), Mary Sue Coleman (Sues), Don Canham (Canham), and Bennie Oosterbaan (Benny). Players are drafted onto one of the six teams when they join the club, and they stay with that team for their entire Michigan Rugby careers.
